Passengers on Air Astana flights will soon be able to browse the internet, stream high-definition media, and send instant messages at 35,000 feet. The airline plans to deploy satellite broadband across its commercial jet fleet, with the first equipped aircraft anticipated to enter passenger service in October 2026.
To deliver seamless gate-to-gate connectivity over expansive routes connecting Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia, aviation authorities and Air Astana are evaluating leading global satellite communication networks, primarily Viasat and Eutelsat OneWeb.
Why In-Flight Connectivity Demands Advanced Satellite Fleets
Unlike terrestrial mobile networks that rely on nearby 4G/5G towers, an airliner flying at 900 km/h across remote mountain ranges or vast Kazakhstani steppes requires satellite transceivers mounted on top of the fuselage. These steerable phased-array antennas continuously track satellites across high orbits.
1. Viasat: Proven Ka-Band Commercial Dominance
Viasat powers in-flight Wi-Fi for world-leading carriers including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Singapore Airlines. Operating powerful geostationary (GEO) satellites in the Ka-band spectrum, Viasat delivers high bandwidth capacity (up to 100+ Mbps per aircraft), allowing hundreds of simultaneous passengers to stream video without buffering.
2. OneWeb: Low-Latency Polar and LEO Coverage
The second compelling architecture is OneWeb’s constellation of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites orbiting at an altitude of 1,200 km. Because LEO satellites are dozens of times closer to Earth than GEO spacecraft, latency drops from 600 milliseconds down to sub-100 milliseconds — enabling seamless Zoom video conferencing, real-time gaming, and instant VPN access.
Initial Fleet Rollout: Prioritizing the Airbus A321LR
The installation of aerodynamic radomes and on-board server racks will initially target Air Astana’s long-range Airbus A321LR fleet, which operates flagship international routes from Almaty and Astana to London, Frankfurt, Dubai, Seoul, and Bangkok.
Equipping aircraft with high-speed satellite Wi-Fi elevates passenger comfort to tier-1 international airline standards, solidifying Air Astana’s reputation as the premier carrier in Central Asia.
