Google and Synaptics announced on October 20 a suite of complementary hardware and software technologies designed to advance on-device artificial intelligence. Google revealed the completed 32-bit architecture for its Coral NPU following the addition of the Matrix Execution Unit, alongside the open-source release of compiler v1.0 built on IREE and MLIR for JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow neural network models (developers.googleblog.com).
The compiler coordinates workload partitioning across host CPU and NPU cores, fuses operational kernels, and tiles matrix blocks to align with local memory constraints (developers.googleblog.com). The MPACT simulator and reference FPGA designs enable engineering teams to validate machine learning models prior to silicon manufacturing (developers.googleblog.com). Furthermore, Google introduced the Coralboard SR prototyping board powered by the Astra SR200 and confirmed global distribution of the Coralboard SL through DigiKey, noting that the SL variant incorporates an Astra SL2619 processor with up to 1 TOPS of Torq NPU capability (developers.googleblog.com).
Three Tiers for Edge Devices
Synaptics introduced its Astra SR200 family of energy-efficient microcontrollers, offering three pin-compatible tiers with manufacturer-rated compute performance: the SR210 delivering 200 GOPS for voice interfaces and sensors, the SR230 at 300 GOPS with display and camera pipelines, and the flagship SR250 delivering 400 GOPS with dual camera and dual display pipelines (synaptics.com).
The microcontrollers combine Torq AI processing on the Coral NPU architecture, Arm Cortex-M85 and Cortex-M52 cores, up to 8 MB of internal SRAM, and expandable integrated DRAM for smart cameras, wearables, and industrial sensors (synaptics.com). The software stack leverages Zephyr RTOS and supports convolutional, transformer, and fully connected networks alongside secure boot and hardware isolation (synaptics.com). Synaptics explicitly designated PSA Level 3 and Common Criteria EAL4+ as certification targets rather than finalized accreditations (synaptics.com).
What This Means for Readers
According to Google, software teams gain an open architecture, compiler stack, and simulation tools to evaluate edge intelligence models prior to hardware manufacturing. According to Synaptics, the shared architecture and unified SDK across the three tiers provide developers with a dependable scaling path within the product family.
