Apple overtakes Nvidia: what the change at the top means for investors in Kazakhstan

Apple has regained its position as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company, with a valuation of $5.03 trillion at the close on October 30 (inbusiness.kz). It overtook Nvidia even as both companies’ shares fell. For investors in Kazakhstan, the key takeaway is that ranking first by market value does not necessarily mean gains on an investment.

What happened

Apple shares fell 1.23% on Friday, while Nvidia dropped 4.22%. That left Nvidia’s market capitalisation, or the total value of its shares, at $4.93 trillion. Apple reclaimed the top spot for the first time since late July.

The shift came amid a sell-off in technology stocks. Investors are growing more cautious about how soon large investments in artificial intelligence will pay off. Quarterly results from technology companies, including Intel and Amazon, put further pressure on the sector.

What this means for Kazakhstan

Investors in Kazakhstan comparing Apple and Nvidia should distinguish between a company’s position in the rankings and its share price performance. On Friday, shares in the top-ranked company also lost value. Apple’s return to first place therefore says nothing on its own about the returns from buying its shares.

The timeframe also matters. Over the past month, Apple shares gained 3%, while Nvidia fell 10%. Apple shares have risen 27% since the start of 2026. These figures cover different periods: a monthly return cannot stand in for an annual one.

Different approaches to spending help explain investor interest in Apple. The company has been more restrained in its infrastructure spending while the market questions whether large-scale construction for AI will pay off. Against this backdrop, a business’s ability to sustain cash flow provides another reason to favour it when comparing stocks.

Still, the expected growth in Apple’s free cash flow remains a forecast. This measure reflects the money a company has left after operating expenses and capital expenditure. It should be distinguished from share price gains that have already happened.

The next test is whether technology companies’ AI spending can deliver returns. Doubts about how soon these investments will pay off are what is weighing on the sector now.
