Astana Is Building an Investment Platform for Central Asian Startups: Up to $500,000 per Company

Новая инвестиционная платформа для стартапов Центральной Азии в Астане

Accelerate Prosperity Limited has been registered in Astana as the company through which the international Accelerate Prosperity initiative intends to finance startups and growing businesses in Central Asia. Kazakhstani projects are among the potential recipients. The stated maximum investment in a single company is $500,000.

This is not a grant program: Accelerate Prosperity plans to invest through debt and equity instruments. AP Astana has not yet announced a full investment application process on its website. Entrepreneurs can currently submit a preliminary expression of interest.

Who the financing is for

The platform targets projects from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It considers technology startups and small growing companies at different stages, from product development and validation to business expansion.

For early-stage projects, AP Astana’s official website lists financing of up to $200,000. Companies at the growth stage may receive more than $200,000. Accelerate Prosperity’s materials announcing the platform specify an overall ceiling of up to $500,000 per business. The actual amount will depend on the company and transaction terms.

The platform’s stated interests extend beyond IT. Potential sectors include agriculture, construction, energy, tourism, education and healthcare. Selection will consider business prospects and social or environmental impact, including job creation, local economic development and opportunities for women, young people and people with disabilities.

Digital Business reports that the main markets will be Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, while Kazakhstani companies will be expected to be at a later development stage. AP Astana’s official website includes Kazakhstan in the program’s geography but does not state that separate threshold for Kazakhstani applicants on its terms page. Teams from Kazakhstan should clarify the applicable criteria directly before submitting a full application.

What the investor receives in return

AP Astana lists debt, equity and hybrid financing. Debt entails an obligation to repay funds under the contract. With an equity investment, the investor receives a stake in the company. Hybrid transaction terms depend on the instrument selected.

Digital Business reports that a SAFE is among the options under consideration: an agreement under which an investment can convert into equity upon an agreed event. AP Astana has not yet published standard deal terms. The amount, investor’s stake, repayment timeline and other obligations will therefore need to be assessed in the offer made to each company.

The publication also says that receiving financing will require a holding company in the AIFC jurisdiction. AP Astana’s public page has not yet published this as a condition for submitting a preliminary expression of interest. Founders should clarify at what stage that structure will be required and who pays for its establishment and maintenance.

Where the funding comes from and why the platform is in Astana

AP Astana was established by Accelerate Prosperity with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office under the Green Inclusive Growth initiative. The platform’s official website estimates its initial size at approximately $20 million. It also aims to help supported companies raise a further $50 million from external investors by 2031. This is a target for additional capital, not funding already available for disbursement.

Digital Business puts the initial capital at $23 million. Because AP Astana’s own public page gives a different estimate, the exact approved size requires further confirmation. Registration in the AIFC does not itself demonstrate how much investment funding has already been received.

Accelerate Prosperity is an established international initiative, rather than a new team without entrepreneurial support experience. According to its own cumulative figures, it has financed 716 companies with $17.8 million and helped them raise $64.62 million in additional funding. These figures cover all of Accelerate Prosperity’s activities and cannot be attributed to the new Astana platform.

How to apply

AP Astana’s website currently hosts an Expression of Interest form for startups and growing companies. The organization says it will open a separate investment application process later. A deadline, detailed questionnaire and review dates have not yet been published.

The preliminary form lets a company introduce its project but does not constitute successful selection or a promise of investment. When the full application process opens, entrepreneurs will need to check requirements concerning business stage, company structure and financing instrument.

For Kazakhstani startups, this is a potential new source of growth-stage capital. Practical terms will become clearer once AP Astana publishes its application rules and first deals.
