Astana has hosted HackAlem AI, the largest artificial intelligence hackathon in the history of Central Eurasia. Uniting more than 2,500 developers, data scientists, and engineers under one roof with official backing from OpenAI, NVIDIA, and the Ministry of Digital Development, the landmark event featured an official attempt to establish a new Guinness World Record for the largest single-venue generative AI hackathon.
High-Intensity AI Engineering Across 10 Industry Verticals
Over an intense engineering sprint, participating teams developed functional AI prototypes across ten prioritized socioeconomic sectors:
- Healthcare & Diagnostics: Medical triage chatbots, automated radiological screening, and clinical schedule optimization for polyclinics.
- GovTech & Civic Services: Conversational agents simplifying public administrative procedures and legislative document parsing.
- AgriTech & Water Resources: Satellite telemetry analysis, automated soil moisture forecasting, and canal leak detection.
- Fintech & Anti-Fraud: Transactional anomaly detection, KYC automation, and synthetic media defense.
- Education & Kazakh Language: Multilingual tutoring systems, automated essay feedback, and pedagogical tools supporting the Kazakh language.
Direct Technical Support from OpenAI and NVIDIA
Participants were equipped with enterprise developer tooling. OpenAI provided dedicated API access, priority compute allocations, and virtual mentorship from Silicon Valley research engineers. Concurrently, NVIDIA provided cloud access to GPU compute clusters, enabling teams to fine-tune open-weight models and run complex computer-vision inferences in real time.
Guinness World Record Verification
The Guinness World Record attempt was monitored by accredited adjudicators who verified active physical attendance, unique code commits, and project submissions throughout the coding sprint. With over 2,500 checked-in developers actively committing code to GitHub repositories simultaneously, the event surpassed previous international benchmarks for single-location AI hackathons.
Translating Hackathon Prototypes into Production Pilots
Rather than allowing hackathon code to languish in forgotten repositories, Astana Hub and Alem.ai Foundation announced that top-performing teams will enter an accelerated incubation track. Winning projects will receive seed grants, cloud credits, and direct introductions to corporate enterprise partners and government ministries for commercial piloting.
Kickstarting AI Month in Kazakhstan
HackAlem AI served as the dynamic opening ceremony for AI Month in Kazakhstan — a multi-week series of summits, research symposiums, and startup showcases leading up to the Digital Bridge Forum in Astana. The overwhelming developer turnout demonstrated the depth and boundless enthusiasm of Central Asia’s emerging tech generation.
