inDrive Plans to Test Robotaxis in Astana in 2027: Initial Rides Will Feature a Safety Operator

Kabanbay Batyr Avenue and city traffic in Astana

Ride-hailing platform inDrive announced on October 23 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with NVIDIA and Pony.ai, selecting Kazakhstan as the inaugural test market for autonomous passenger mobility (blog.indrive.com). The partners are assessing the technical, operational, regulatory, and commercial feasibility of self-driving trips, with initial tests in Astana targeted for the first half of 2027.

Partner Roles and Technology Stack

The participating companies have outlined distinct operational responsibilities for the upcoming pilot. Pony.ai plans to supply its seventh-generation (Gen-7) autonomous vehicles for the fleet. inDrive will manage consumer dispatch through its established mobility app and oversee fleet service operations in the city. NVIDIA will deliver AI computing infrastructure anchored by its DRIVE Hyperion architecture, which serves as a production reference platform for Level 4 automated driving, alongside the Alpamayo Stack and Halos. According to inDrive, its application has surpassed 400 million downloads across more than 1,200 cities in 47 countries, though downloads do not represent active monthly passenger counts.

Evaluating Winter Driving Conditions

inDrive founder Arsen Tomsky noted that Astana offers a demanding testing environment characterized by heavy snowfall, icy road surfaces, and sub-zero temperatures. The release presents Astana’s challenging winter conditions as an opportunity to evaluate autonomous driving in future tests; it does not report results from tests in the capital. If the initial Astana deployment succeeds, the partners plan to explore expanding autonomous ride services to other metropolitan areas across Kazakhstan and broader inDrive operational markets.

What This Means for Readers

  • Field testing in Astana is slated to begin in the first half of 2027, as inDrive CTO Yuri Misnik told TechCrunch (techcrunch.com). The tests will initially involve a safety operator, with fully driverless mobility serving as the ultimate objective.
  • Autonomous trips are intended to be hailed directly via the inDrive mobile application, but any operational launch is contingent upon finalizing an agreement with the Government of Kazakhstan.
  • Pricing structures, fleet size, and passenger onboarding protocols for the pilot project have not yet been disclosed by the companies.
