Reddit wants more users to sign in: what could change for Kazakhstan

Reddit wants most of its audience to browse while signed in to an account, Digital Business reports (t.me). The platform aims to reduce its reliance on search engines, protect its content from AI services and increase advertising revenue. Access conditions could change for readers in Kazakhstan if a test of the new format includes the country.

What happened

Google drove users to Reddit for years. People even added the platform’s name to search queries to find discussions. Now Reddit links declining referrals to the spread of AI-powered search: these services increasingly provide answers without users visiting websites.

The company wants to gather more data about users’ interests by having them sign in. This information will help it target ads and tailor recommendations more precisely. Reddit also plans to retain incognito mode for anonymous browsing. Both moving most of its audience into accounts and keeping this mode are part of its announced plans.

What this means for Kazakhstan

For readers in Kazakhstan, the potential changes concern access to discussions. If the new format reaches the country, what will matter is how readers can browse once they land on Reddit. The company’s plans do not yet provide grounds to say that every visitor will have to sign in.

The promised incognito mode matters for anyone reading without signing in. Reddit intends to retain anonymous browsing, so the plan to move its audience into accounts does not in itself mean abandoning it. The announced intentions do not establish exactly which pages or actions will be available in each mode.

Another aspect of the changes is the use of readers’ interests for advertising and recommendations. More precise targeting is exactly why Reddit wants to gather more information about its signed-in audience. If the new approach extends to Kazakhstan, it will also affect how the platform selects content for local users.

For those who find discussions through Google, it helps to distinguish between two stages: finding a page and viewing it on Reddit. The company is changing its approach to access on its own platform. A related topic is links in AI Mode and AI Overviews, which raem.kz has covered.

What to expect from Reddit’s testing

The company plans to test the new format in selected markets outside the US. That geographical scope alone does not confirm Kazakhstan’s participation. For local readers, what will matter in practice are the conditions of the specific test: where it begins and how anonymous browsing is retained.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the right decision for our platform and the right decision for our business,” said Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman.

If you read Reddit without an account, check the access conditions when the test launches. For now, the company says it plans both to have more users sign in and to retain incognito mode.
