At 16 She Lost Her Hearing — And Built an Assistive App That Now Empowers Thousands

История создания мобильного сервиса инклюзивной коммуникации для слабослышащих людей

Nurdana Bimakhanbet spent approximately $100 developing the initial prototype of Hearless. The mobile application converts real-time conversational speech into instant subtitles, synthesizes typed responses into clear natural audio, and provides an interactive platform for learning sign language. Today, the technology is undergoing clinical testing with doctors and patients across medical institutions in Almaty.

In early September 2026, the project gained prominent recognition at youth technology competitions, proving that personal lived experience combined with software ingenuity can deliver transformative social impact.

From Isolation to Engineering Resolution

At age 16, a sudden medical complication resulted in profound bilateral hearing loss for Nurdana. Overnight, routine everyday interactions — answering questions in school classrooms, ordering groceries, or visiting medical clinics — became daunting communication barriers. Rather than surrendering to social isolation, she channeled her energy into learning programming and natural language processing.

How Hearless Functions in Daily Life

Hearless addresses the two-way dynamic of human dialogue:

  • High-Speed Speech-to-Text: The app listens continuously to ambient conversations, filtering background noise and displaying large, readable live captions in real time so the user can follow dialogue seamlessly.
  • Voice Synthesis Engine: For users who cannot speak audibly, typed responses are immediately voiced in natural Kazakh or Russian speech.
  • Sound Hazard Alerts: The app’s acoustic classifier monitors the environment for critical auditory hazards (such as sirens, car horns, or fire alarms), vibrating the phone with distinctive tactile patterns.
  • Kazakh Sign Language Learning Module: Interactive tutorials and video drills helping families and friends master basic finger-spelling and sign vocabulary.

Overcoming the Low-Resource Language Barrier in Kazakh

While global speech engines perform acceptably in English, adapting acoustic models to the acoustic nuances, dialectal inflections, and phonetic specifics of the Kazakh language presented a formidable challenge. Nurdana collected voice samples from diverse speakers to calibrate acoustic models, achieving reliable transcription accuracy in noisy clinical environments.

Clinical Pilots in Almaty

Hearless is currently being evaluated across three major clinics in Almaty, facilitating consultation between deaf patients and healthcare practitioners without requiring a human sign interpreter to be physically present in the examination room. With plans to scale into educational institutions, Hearless stands as an inspiring testament to inclusive technology created in Kazakhstan.
