425 KTZ Freight Locomotives Outfitted with Trip Optimizer Automated Train Operation System

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) has equipped 425 mainline freight diesel locomotives with Trip Optimizer—an intelligent automated train control system that calculates optimal run profiles and automates throttle and dynamic braking. Factoring in track topography, speed restrictions, and train tonnage, the system assists locomotive engineers in driving trains with reduced fuel consumption.

The hardware was deployed across regional service facilities in Aktobe, Makat, Sekseul, and Ayagoz. In October, the national carrier reported active system operations alongside firmware upgrades for the locomotive telemetry modems.

The initiative has transitioned well beyond testing. As early as August 24, KTZ announced that Trip Optimizer had advanced from pilot evaluations to revenue commercial service. By that milestone, 425 locomotives were outfitted, logging over 4 million operating kilometers under automated advisory control.

How Freight Train Cruise Control Functions

Developed by Wabtec, Trip Optimizer acts as an advanced energy-management cruise control designed specifically for heavy-haul rail networks.

Unlike automotive cruise control systems that maintain a uniform velocity, freight rail platforms must continuously compute trailing tonnage, train length, tractive effort, ruling grades, curves, and rolling dispatch speed mandates.

Using these parameters, the algorithm constructs an energy-optimized speed profile. En route, it automatically modulates tractive effort and dynamic braking—a mode where traction motors generate resistance to retard train momentum without engaging pneumatic friction brakes.

The operational goal is maintaining schedule adherence while eliminating unnecessary throttle applications and excessive fuel burn. For heavy bulk freight, efficiency hinges on precision timing between tractive power, coasting, and regenerative braking.

Locomotive Engineers Retain Full Operational Command

Trip Optimizer operates under continuous supervision by the two-person locomotive crew. In an October 9 report covering an operational inspection by Asan Umbetov, Head of KTZ-Freight Transportation, the company emphasized that ultimate operational control remains strictly with the locomotive engineer.

Subsystem automation does not equate to autonomous, unattended train operations. The platform serves as an operational copilot, maintaining trajectory targets while the human operator retains manual override capability.

Functional capabilities also depend on deployed software options. While Wabtec offers integrated modules like SmartHPT (horsepower-per-ton optimization) and positive train control linkages, their presence in Wabtec’s product catalog does not automatically imply activation across KTZ’s fleet.

Quantifying Tangible Economic Impact

The headline value proposition of Trip Optimizer is diesel fuel conservation. Wabtec notes the platform holds United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verification for up to 10% fuel savings under standard operating conditions.

However, this figure reflects baseline vendor lab ratings. In its public disclosures, KTZ has not yet published audited net fuel savings in liters, metric tons, or tenge across the domestic rail grid.

Extrapolating a flat 10% reduction across the entire equipped fleet as confirmed cost savings remains premature. A definitive economic assessment requires validated route telemetry, gross trailing weight data, and baseline comparison trials against manual driving cohorts.

The underlying economics remain clear: small fractional savings per ton-kilometer yield substantial cumulative cost reductions across high-density freight corridors once operational discipline is established.

Infrastructure Demands: Digital Topography and Cellular Telemetry

Fleet retrofitting was executed progressively. As of May 29, 2026, KTZ had installed 393 Trip Optimizer kits out of the targeted 425.

In parallel, ground infrastructure was digitized. A June operational report noted the commercial activation of 48 out of 65 planned track territories, covering 9,675 digitized route-kilometers out of a 10,000-kilometer mandate.

Real-time telemetry was secured via 385 industrial SIM cards integrated into onboard communications gateways, certified through the national security verification portal. In October, routine over-the-air firmware upgrades were deployed.

Enduring automation requires relentless lifecycle maintenance: track charts must mirror civil speed adjustments, software profiles must adapt to seasonal diesel grades, and onboard sensors must maintain calibration.

With 425 locomotives equipped and over 4 million kilometers logged under automation, KTZ has established a substantial deployment footprint. The defining benchmark ahead will be the audited balance sheet savings in fuel burn and equipment wear.
