Alim Khamitov: From Young Entrepreneurs Club to Venture Fund with 28 Portfolio Startups

Алим Хамитов — генеральный директор венчурного фонда MOST Ventures, Казахстан

Alim Khamitov is the CEO of venture capital fund MOST Ventures and co-founder of MOST Holding, one of the earliest private institutional ecosystems supporting technology entrepreneurs across Central Asia. Over a 15-year trajectory, the enterprise evolved from an informal youth discussion club into a multi-tiered investment holding that has backed 28 technology startups and completed its first major institutional exit in 2025. RAEM examined how Khamitov and his partners constructed private venture infrastructure before sovereign accelerators existed.

Not a Solo Founder: MOST Was Built as a Partnership from Day One

Alongside Khamitov, one constant partner appears throughout the history of MOST: Mirat Akhmetsadykov, co-founder and Managing Partner of the holding. The two entrepreneurs share the stage at major conferences, coordinate strategic deployments, and jointly represented the ecosystem at the launch of their flagship Almaty IT hub in the presence of Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister. Roles within the holding are strategically demarcated: Khamitov serves as CEO of venture arm MOST Ventures, while Akhmetsadykov and Khamitov jointly operate as Managing Partners across the broader holding group. For perspective on regional venture models, see our analysis on Maksat Kuzembaev’s pre-seed investment strategy at AI Startify.

Early Failures Preceded the Breakthrough: From Smart Bus Stops to Accelerators

Born and raised in Almaty, Khamitov graduated from Satbayev University before spending four years in the United States, studying information systems at Indiana University while concurrently pursuing business management at the Kelley School of Business. Returning to Almaty, his path to institutional venture capital was not linear: he operated an IT outsourcing firm and attempted multiple startups in telemedicine and urban transit, including a venture deploying “Smart Bus Stops.” None gained commercial traction. To understand how regional startups compete on global stages, read our feature on the Startup World Cup regional qualifier in Kazakhstan.

The turning point arrived when Khamitov participated in an American startup accelerator. Experiencing structured venture incubation firsthand, he recognized a glaring structural gap: Central Asia possessed exceptional mathematical and engineering talent, but lacked private early-stage incubation infrastructure. Returning to Kazakhstan, he partnered with Akhmetsadykov to build that bridge themselves.

A Decade of Infrastructure Building Before Launching the Fund

In 2011, the founders launched their prototype: the “Club of Young Entrepreneurs,” a grassroots community that engaged over 10,000 aspiring founders. By 2012, the community pivoted strictly toward technology startups. On September 25, 2015, they formally opened MOST Business Incubator—the nation’s first fully private incubator. By 2021, the incubator had executed 13 cohort acceleration programs, mentoring over 100 technology startups.

$10 Million Target in 2020 and a $5 Million Invested Portfolio

MOST Ventures Fund I officially launched in December 2020 with a target size of $10 million, focusing on Pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A rounds across Central Asia, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, and the CIS. In 2022, microfinance institution KMF anchored the fund with a $2 million institutional commitment. To date, MOST Ventures has deployed $5 million across 28 portfolio companies, celebrating its first major secondary exit in 2025 via automotive maintenance marketplace CTOgram. Building on this track record, the team launched its second fund in 2025—the $30 million MOSTida VC Fund, focused on later-stage Seed and Series A investments.

UMAY Angels and MOST Hub: Combining Capital with Physical Co-Working

Recognizing that early-stage founders need mentorship alongside cash, Khamitov co-founded UMAY Angels Club, syndicating experienced local business owners to provide “smart money” and market access. Simultaneously, the holding constructed physical infrastructure: MOST Hub in Almaty, spanning the MAAK Space co-working campus with 1,800 square meters and 210 dedicated workstations. Operating a physical hub alongside an active fund created an organic deal-flow pipeline rare among regional emerging managers.

Central Eurasian Venture Forum (CEVF)

To connect regional founders with global capital, MOST Holding created the Central Eurasian Venture Forum (CEVF), with Astana Hub serving as title partner. In 2025, CEVF hosted roughly 1,000 international delegates from over 20 countries at The Ritz-Carlton, Almaty, cementing its reputation as the premier cross-border venture gathering in Central Eurasia.

Investment Philosophy: Founders Over Pitch Decks

Khamitov consistently articulates a disciplined investment philosophy: early-stage venture capital is fundamentally a bet on human resilience rather than pitch deck aesthetics or early code repositories. His core evaluation metrics focus on a founder’s speed of execution, ability to attract exceptional engineering talent, and willingness to pivot based on unforgiving market feedback.
