DreamLight: How an Astana CG Studio Evolved into Industrial VR Simulators and Medical EdTech

Владимир Баринов — основатель студии DreamLight и CEO VARDIX Group

Founded in Astana, computer graphics and interactive technology studio DreamLight, operating under the VARDIX technology group, represents one of Kazakhstan’s most durable software engineering success stories. With an operational track record spanning over two decades, the studio completed more than 200 high-complexity projects, engineered 53 scientifically validated medical 3D animations, and deployed specialized VR industrial simulators across heavy manufacturing, energy, and medical faculties worldwide.

DreamLight is an instructive case study for Central Asian tech: an engineering collective that successfully weathered multiple macroeconomic and technological inflection cycles—migrating from commercial 3D advertising to real-time interactive applications, progressing into VR/AR hardware, and culminating in scalable, off-the-shelf software products licensed to international universities and industrial enterprises.

From Commercial 3D Advertising to Interactive Educational Software

In conversations with regional media, founder Vladimir Barinov recounted entering the commercial graphics sector in 2002, when regional 3D computer animation studios were in their absolute infancy. Early engagements centered around commercial television advertising, music videos, and cinematic visual effects.

The decisive pivot toward educational software occurred in 2008 through the development of an interactive 3D veterinary and livestock textbook. Between 2012 and 2013, the leadership recognized a fundamental business model limitation: pre-rendered video is an inert deliverable, whereas interactive software empowers end-users to manipulate 3D anatomical models, simulate surgical maneuvers, and diagnose machinery anomalies.

This marked the structural evolution from a bespoke design agency into a software product enterprise. A traditional visual effects studio sells billed production hours; an interactive simulation platform demands intricate interface programming and state-machine logic, but yields high-margin repeatable software licenses deployable across hundreds of institutional clients globally.

By the mid-2010s, international enterprise expansion became paramount. In 2020, Barinov indicated that the vast majority of institutional clients were located outside Kazakhstan, supported by partner distribution networks spanning more than 30 countries.

In 2018, the studio established its primary 3D and VR engineering hub inside Astana Hub. Prior to selecting the capital, founders evaluated alternative development hubs across Eastern Europe, Minsk, and the United States. Astana emerged as an ideal nexus, combining geographic proximity to Central Asian and European client time zones, competitive developer talent, and the technology park’s 0% tax framework.

Why 3D Computer Graphics Paved the Way for Deep Medical Simulation

Medical visualization rapidly developed into DreamLight’s signature specialty. By 2026, the studio produced 53 accredited scientific 3D films detailing human pathology, oncology, cardiovascular dynamics, and cellular biology under academic medical oversight.

Scientific medical animation occupies a rigorous threshold between cinema and peer-reviewed pharmacology. Depicting a molecule’s receptor binding mechanics or an oncological radiation trajectory requires mathematical and biological accuracy rather than aesthetic artistic license.

This technical rigor laid the groundwork for AcademiX3D—an interactive virtual patient clinical simulation suite comprising over 500 virtual clinical pathology scenarios. Medical students diagnose virtual patients, evaluate symptom trajectories, and simulate triage protocols in low-risk digital sandboxes.

Industrial Simulation: Mechanicum and Heavy Machinery VR

Concurrently, DreamLight expanded into industrial enterprise engineering via Mechanicum, an interactive VR simulator training technicians on high-voltage electrical installations, mining equipment, and metallurgical plant operations.

Industrial clients achieve significant operational savings: apprentice technicians practice intricate maintenance protocols in immersive VR headsets without halting active multi-million-dollar extraction machinery or risking physical injury.

Balancing Bespoke B2B Contracts with Productized Software R&D

Developing dedicated proprietary software involves substantial upfront capital before licensing revenues materialize. DreamLight successfully mitigated this financial risk through a hybrid model: bespoke B2B corporate contracts generate steady operational cash flow, which directly subsidizes internal R&D on off-the-shelf VR software products.

Cross-functional technical competencies maximize efficiency: a skilled Unity or Unreal Engine programmer, 3D rigger, and technical artist fluidly transition between industrial turbine simulations and cardiovascular software modules.

To cultivate local engineering talent, the team fostered the CG-SREDA professional community around its Astana Hub laboratory, uniting approximately 500 Kazakhstani digital artists, technical animators, and game engine specialists.

DreamLight demonstrates a compelling export roadmap for Kazakhstani Creative Tech: originating from specialized craft skills—3D computer modeling—and methodically evolving into high-value software platforms where international clients evaluate simulation precision and clinical efficacy rather than geographic origin.
