Kazakhstan has temporarily halted oil transport through the Atyrau–Samara pipeline after a drone attack on infrastructure in Russia. Pumping stopped on November 2 at 06:09 Astana time. The Energy Ministry expects oil intake to resume “soon” but has not given an exact date (kursiv.media).

What happened

According to Energy Ministry spokesperson Assel Serikpayeva, drones attacked facilities at the Samara production and dispatch hub overnight into November 2. Transport of Kazakh oil along the route was then halted.

Specialist teams are assessing the infrastructure’s technical condition. The ministry said it would provide further information as updates become available.

What this means for oil supplies

Atyrau–Samara is a section of the Uzen–Atyrau–Samara trunk oil pipeline. It carries Kazakh oil into Russia’s Transneft pipeline network. The shutdown temporarily interrupted transport along this route.

According to KazTransOil, 7,573 thousand tonnes of oil passed through the section in the first nine months of 2026. That figure reflects the volume transported before the shutdown, rather than the losses caused by it.

Previous shutdowns on the route

The route has been shut down before, including on January 11, 2021. On that occasion, rain mixed with snow and severe icing caused power supply problems in the Mangystau and Atyrau regions.

Pumping was suspended at 05:00 Moscow time and resumed at 19:59 the same day.

The Energy Ministry said it would provide further information on oil intake as updates become available.
